What’s Involved?
When you come in, a dental hygienist will greet and show you to the dental chair. They will conduct most of your treatment; your dentist, on the other hand, will come in now and then to see you and ensure everything is going smoothly.
Described below are the steps that are involved in this routine appointment:
The Exam:
- Our dentist will review your medical/dental history. They’ll ask you if you’re taking medications and your brushing and flossing habits at home.
- The visual inspection is next. Our dentist will examine your mouth, teeth, and gums for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other oral health issues.
- If necessary, x-rays of your teeth and jaw may be taken to detect any underlying dental issues that are not visible to the naked eye.
- Our dentist will also check for signs of oral cancer by examining your tongue, throat, jaw, and other soft tissues in your mouth.
The Cleaning
- First up is the scaling process. As the name indicates, the hygienist will use a scaler or an ultrasonic instrument to remove any plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and along the gum line.
- Then, using a polishing tool and a gritty paste, stains and any remaining debris on your smile are scrubbed off, leaving your teeth looking and feeling clean.
- The hygienist will floss between your teeth to remove any plaque or debris that may have been missed during scaling and polishing.
- Last but certainly not least is the fluoride treatment. You’ll be given a gel, foam, or varnish that will help protect your teeth from cavities and strengthen the enamel. This sits on your smile for a minute; then, you can spit and rinse.
Please let our dentist near you, know if you have any concerns or questions before, throughout, or after the appointment.
